    Der Text

Hi, my name`s John and I work as a flying doctor fort he Flying Doctor Service in Australia. I`ve worked here for fifteen years in a big hospital in Brisbane, but that wasn`t as exciting as this job.

About ten percent of the Australian population live in the Outback – that means in places far away from towns an cities. The Flying Doctor Service was started in Queensland in 1928 by another John
-John Flynn, who people called Flynn of the medical service for people who couldn`t esily get to doctors or hospitals. It only became possible, of course, woth the development of aeroplanes and radio technology.

We have a regular service and an emergency service. The regular service means that we fly out on a fixed date to a certain place and people can come to us with their medical problems. The emergency service is for when something unexpected happens. We get a call and we have to go to a certain place as quickly as possible. Before the Service started, many people died because there was no medical help.

Today we have over 50 aircraft in 22 different place, and we fly about 60,000 kilometers a year. Since the 1940s, women have worked for the service, at first as nurses, and now as doctors and pilots, too. There isn`t really such a thing as a normal day. We have a 24- hour service, so I sometimes work early, sometimes late and sometimes all night. And we never know what the day will bring – that`s one of the reasons I love my job.
