Hallo,
ich schreibe demnächst eine Gedichtsinterpretation als Arbeit und wollte deshalb um eine kleine Bewertung einer Übung bitten.
Das Gedicht ist folgendes:
ZitatAlles anzeigenUpon the street they lie
Beside the broken stone:
The blood of children stares from the broken stone.Death came out of the sky
In the bright afternoon:
Darkness slanted over the bright afternoon.Again the sky is clear
But upon the earth a stain:
The earth is darkened with a darkening stain:A wound which everywhere
Corrupts the hearts of men:
The blood of children corrupts the heart of men.Silence is in the air:
The stars move to their places:
Silent and serene the stars move to their places.
Und mein Text:
The poem with the title "The children" written by William Soutar explores war and its cruel consequences.
It consists of six stanzas of which each has three verses. No traditional rhyme scheme is used, conspicuos is the repitition of each last word in the second and third lines. Also striking ist the interruption of the rhythm in every first two lines by the third one, drawing the interruption of peace and regularity.
In his poem the author uses quite a lot of symbols as finding a way to deal with the traumatizing incident. For instance, he talks of "broken stone" (ll.2-3) instead of "destruction" and "Death came out of the sky" instead of mentioning the planes, bombs, etc. which brought it about.
Once more with using "darkness" (l.6) as a symbol, he also highlights the contrast with "the bright afternoon". (ll.5-6)
Furthermore Souter does not leave the question of guilt unconsidered. Although "the sky is clear [again]" (l.7) "upon earth [one find] a stain", expressing the disappearance of previous innocence.
Those who are blamed are the soldiers, men, whose hearts have been corrupted by murdering children.
However, the world seems to get normal again, so the fifth strophe. Especially the alliteration in line 15 ("Silent and serene") suggest peace and calm in the air after the bombing.
Yet, with mentioning the ded children on earth and in addition working with irony in the last verse, the author makes attentive to all the sorrow the war has brought and the charity the involved have lost.
Finally one can say that the way Souter deals with the difficult topic, working with contrasts, particulary the innocence of children with destruction and death, makes the poem very expressive.
