Sport in South Africa has a high priority. Basically, there are a wide range of sports, similar to the sports in Europe, although winter sports are entirely absent. As in many former British colonies are the rugby and cricket - by far - the most important sports, at least for the white population. Both sports are in schools taught and practiced hard, rugby but not in the lower grades because of the excessive risk of injury. On the weekend you do not look - like in Germany - the football results on, but intoxicated at the rugby and cricket games that are broadcast on television. Pride is one of the "Springboks", South Africa's national rugby team, which won the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup in 1998 and 2004, the Tri-Nations tournament against Australia and New Zealand.
Football - Soccer - is from the white South Africans accepted only reluctantly, though this since the last World Cup has changed slightly. At many schools there are now joint stock companies, at least where football is played.
In the black population of the football, however, for many years by far the most popular sport, and there is hardly a black child who does not play in recreational football and hardly a black settlement that has no football club or any football field.
Eine great significance in the Swimming South Africa, especially as a sport. Many schools have their own swimming pool, often with the size of a German outdoor swimming pool. In competitive swimming in South Africa are among the world elite, and there are many Olympic medalists like Penelope Heyns, Roland Mark Schoeman and Ryk Neethling.
Also popular is the sport of golf. There are numerous golf courses in the country, often even in smaller places. While golf is more a sport of the middle class, yet it is a matter of course to play golf. The South African man loves it, especially on weekends, playing with his friends - or his wife - to a round of golf.
The 1995 Rugby World Cup was the third Rugby World Cup. It was hosted and won by South Africa, and was the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country.
All of the matches in the 1998 ICC Knock Out were played in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The tournament started with a preliminary match between New Zealand and Zimbabwe to decide which would proceed to the Quarter Finals. The tournament was won by South Africa, who beat West Indies in the final.
The 1996 African Cup of Nations was the 20th edition of the African Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by South Africa, who replaced original hosts Kenya. The field expanded for the first time to sixteen teams, split into four groups of four; the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals. However, Nigeria withdrew from the tournament at the final moment, reducing Group C to only three teams, and the field to fifteen.
