The present cartoon is created by the well-known political cartoonist Horst Haitzinger and was published in the donau newspaper on 21.12.2007.
This picture shows a car on the left side, which drives frontally in the direction of the viewer and on the right side the same car drives back again. Angela Merkel sits at the wheel of the car, Kurt Beck sits on the passenger seat and Sigmar Gabriel sits at the back, holding a sign. On the left side of the picture you can see the front of the sign with the inscription "FOR RADICAL CO2 REDUCTION!". The car sign is labeled with "D" for Germany and "COALITION & CAR INDUSTRY". On the right side of the cartoon where the car drives back, you can see the back of the sign, which Gabriel holds up, with the words "BUT PLEASE NOT ON OUR CAR!". In addition, the caption of the caricature is "The Environmental model student".
With this caricature the cartoonist wants to criticize the attitude of the Grand Coalition and the car industry towards the environmental protection in 2007. The three politicians in the car were all members of the Cabinet Merkel I. Angela Merkel was a Chancellor and chief of the party CDU. Kurt Beck was at that time SPD chairman and Sigmar Gabriel was the minister of environmen and likewise the SPD belonging. The caricature means that, nothing has actually happened, even though the talks on the relationship between the reduction of car exhaust gases and the improvement of environmental protection and the reduction of CO2 emissions have been the subject of frequent talks on the part of politicians and the car industry. While politicians are obviously use a radical reduction in CO2 emissions, they do not carry out this reduction themselves, thus failing to serve as a role model for the rest of the population from which this reduction is expected. All in all, the caricature shows the reader that the behavior and statements of politicians should be questioned and, if necessary, openly criticized. In order to reduce pollution, all people must participate, the politicians, the ordinary population and, above all, the car industry.
In my opinion, this caricature today, in 2017, is more recent than ever. Almost ten years later, the exhaust gas scandal has now been uncovered. The fuel cell as an alternative drive has been long developed, but dust in the safes of some corporations. Instead, the electric motor is covered again, but it is powered by environmentally damaging batteries. Charging is done by means of coal-fired power stations.
