The given cartoon by McLachlan deals with the problem of global warming and its effects on nature, which is symbolized here on animals.
The scene takes place in a polar region because of the ice flues in the background. The upper left-hand corner shows a tiger which is
standing on an ice flue and is drifting towards a glacier. While he is watching the penguins on the bottom right-hand corner, he is showing
his tongue and it can therefore be concluded that he is hungry and he wants to eat them. Some of the penguins are standing at the end
of a glacier and are looking at the tiger with a confused expression on their faces. The other ones in the background are trying to escape
and are obviously very panicked and frightened, because they have figured out the tiger’s intention.
The cartoonist wants to express the fact that the effects on our nature caused by global warming will be worse than some people might expect.
For example, this cartoon is a reference to the change in weather patterns that are caused by the large amounts of carbon dioxide that are being
produced by human activities. These gases reach our atmosphere and contribute to the warming of our weather, which is shown here by the
melting ice fuels. In addition to that, tigers normally live in the Siberian forests or in the jungles of Malaysia, but because the temperature
on the poles has risen, the tiger in the cartoon is now able to also live in a region that is normally colder. However, the cartoon conveys
the message that we need to protect our planet from global warming.
Although I think that the cartoonist exaggerates, I agree with the message because the cartoon certainly also bears a lot of truth.
In my opinion, maybe the people need something shocking to really see what is happening. Clearly, there is no doubt our planet is
warming and because of that the cartoonist wants to show that we really need to take care of our earth, if not, nobody can guarantee
how bad the effects will be in our future.
