Hallo Leute,
The cartoon was created by a cartoonist called “Zapiro” and was published in the year 2011. It deals with the of the United Kingdom’s monarchy in the 21st century.
In the foreground you can see some animals. A sign on top of them tells us that they are extinct, that they are not alive anymore. Those animals, namely a mammoth and a dodo, are presented in a museum. The Dodo who stands in the front right corner of the exhibition looks through a window to the outside. There, in the background, a parade takes place. A bride as well as a bride groom sits inside an open coach which navigates through the street. The label on the right side of the coach indicates that either the bride or the groom is a member of the royal family. Some soldiers who ride on horses accompany the coach. Besides the parade there is a large crowd of cheering people. Some of them even wave a Union Jack.
This parade can be seen as a symbol for the monarchy as a whole. The comparison of the monarchy on the one hand with extinct animals on the other implies that both are relicts from the past. But, in opposition to the animals, the monarchy is still very well alive. About this fact the dodo is quite angry as the three lines above his head show. Now the mammoth tells the dodo that he shouldn’t be angry because there is “no rational reason why they [the royal family] have made it into the 21st century”. This refers to the uselessness of a monarchy in a modern democracy and to the enormous costs the royal family produces. The monarchy in the United Kingdom nowadays is a constitutional one which is largely symbolic. The monarch doesn’t influence the countries policies. Therefore the cartoonist criticizes the role of the monarchy. He looks at the royal family as a senseless institution which is, on the other hand rather expensive for the taxpayers.
But the cartoon also shows us that a large part of the people, probably the majority of the English, support the monarchy. This is symbolized by the cheering crowd. So one can say that the cartoonist is as well making fun of the people who blindly cheer at the royal family.
In my opinion the cartoon expresses the cartoonists mind towards monarchy very clearly although he uses some ironic devices such as animals with human attributes. But to my mind there are some reasons why the monarchy actually still exists in the United Kingdom. One point for instance is that the monarchy gives the people something to be proud of. This also refers to the national anthem of England “God save the Queen” where this patriotic feeling is expressed.
Weil es sich ja um eine Übung fürs Abiur handelt, dürft ihr die Messlatte ruhig hoch anlegen. Besonders wichtig sind mir dabei grammatikalische Fehler.
Vielen Dank für eure Hilfe.
Gruß
