The Secret garden - book review
The Secret Garden is one of the most popular novels by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was first published in 1911. Now it is a classic of English children's literature.
The novel tells the story of Mary Lennox a lonely child nobody knows or wants.
She was born into an English family who lives in India, her father and mother were too busy to have a child , so she grew up with nannies. When she was ten years old her adults died from cholera. As nobody was left and no one liked her she was taken back to England to his uncle, Mr. Craven , who got strange after the death of his wife. He locked after the death 100 doors of Misselthwaite Manor and also one garden which was the garden of Mrs. Carven. As Martha Sowerby, her good-natured maidservant, tells Mary Mrs. Carven died there.
Marry learns to love the gigantic gardens and she also wants to find the door to the secret garden. Her first friend is the robin who shows her the key to the secret garden and also the door hidden under tick ivy. Later on she meets Dicken Sowerby in the secret garden. He is the brother of her maidservant, and a boy who knows a lot about nature and animals. Every night she hears a child crying, so she tries to fiend this child. Finely she gets to know that the crying child is her cousin, who is hidden because Mr Carven does not want to see him after his wife´s death. His Name is Colin Carven. Colin believes he was incurable, bedridden and destined to die.
The main theme of the novel is how the secret garden changes all the bad situations of the people of Misselthwaite Manor and makes the tree very different children to such good friends. At the end it is important how Mr Carvens reacts on the change after his long absence.
The novel is very heart-warming and interesting because in every chapter something new happens. Especially the change from the orphaned, spoiled and sickly Mary to the peaceful, friendly and beautiful little girl is fascinating.
The whole roman is well written, it gives you interest to read on and all situations are great described so you could think that you are really in the secret garden too.
Even if it is actually a children's book, the story is so interesting that also adults could read it.
Only the Yorkshire accent is quite difficult to understand, but challenging.
Finely you can say " The Secret Garden" is a fantastic book and I recommend to read it .
